1. General information
The goal of the subejct is to acquire the necessary competences and skills to satisfy the different information needs of the users , mastering the techniques of Information Retrieval. It is developed with a practical approach, that combines the acquisition of theory with laboratory practice. Consequently, it is part of the gradual process of acquisition of competencies that takes place in the degree program. The knowledge acquired in this course will be reinforced and used in Fundamentals of Indexing and General Sources of Information, among others; and will be applied in the elaboration of works and practices throughout the development of the Degree.
The subject is aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 4, 5, and 10.
2. Learning results
- Defines, plans, prepares and designs the correct and appropriate search strategy for each situation. It also modifies the search strategy by applying the appropriate techniques to improve the results and saves the search strategies and results in the appropriate format for export to any program.
- Understands the nature of the different languages involved in this communication process and uses them effectively in information retrieval.
- Identifies and selects the resources and search tools, used in any environment, most appropriate for each information problem (databases, directories, engines, etc.) .
- Identifies and differentiates the characteristics of information retrieval models and their implications in current information systems.
- Applies the criteria used in the evaluation of information systems and their parameters.
- Resolves and applies the criteria for evaluating information resources on the Internet.
- Distinguishes quality and reliable resources from those that are not.
3. Syllabus
1. Conceptualization of Information Retrieval (IR)
2. IR models and languages
3. Search for information
4. RI tools and resources
5. Evaluation of IR tools and systems
6. RI trends.
4. Academic activities
Learning is based on direct interaction with tools and resources. It combines theoretical and practical knowledge in a computer classroom.
Activities:
- Theoretical classes: presentation of theoretical contents and exemplification of procedures.
- Practical classes in a computer classroom: approach, discussion and resolution of search exercises.
- Reflective reading of articles and materials and bibliographic resources of interest.
- Autonomous work is the realization of individual projects on a topic of the syllabus to be agreed with the teacher.
The lessons that make up the program are supplemented with specific bibliography to complete and expand the contents of the subject.
5. Assessment system
FIRST CALL
Continuous assessment system
- Written test: questionnaire of theoretical and practical contents of the subject. Duration: 1:00 h. Valuation: 40% of the final grade.
- Practical test: development and execution of an exercise/s of search and retrieval of information, using for its resolution the techniques, tools and resources explained in the classroom. Delivered on the dates previously indicated by the teacher. Duration 1:00 h. Valuation: 60% of the final grade.
Global assessment test (set by the Faculty)
- Written test: questionnaire on the theoretical and practical contents of the subject. Duration: 1:30. Assessment: 40% of the final grade.
- Practical test: development and execution of an exercise/s of search and retrieval of information, using for its resolution the techniques, tools and resources explained in the classroom. Duration: 1:30. Assessment: 60% of the final grade.
No test will be averaged if at least 30% of the grade is not obtained in either the continuous or the global evaluation.
Assessment criteria:
- Relevance of the terms selected in the information searches and correctness of the bibliographic resources used.
- Quality and relevance of responses.
- Analysis, clarity of exposition and adequate written expression.
- Terminological rigor.
SECOND CALL
Global assessment test: identical to that of the first call.
